Abstract:

The routine monitoring of various water matrices for indicator organisms has been used within the water industry for decades to verify the efficacy of water treatment processes and the health of water networks.

Bacteria such as Escherichia coli and total coliforms are used as surrogates for potential faecal contamination events and associated pathogens, or may indicate compromise of the integrity of the water network and associated water health.

More and more commonly however, it has become necessary to quantify the pathogens themselves. Here we look at the importance of two relatively common waterborne pathogens:

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Legionella

We discuss the significance of these pathogens to public health, the current global regulatory frameworks, current detection technologies, and novel strategies being employed to conserve resources and respond faster.

Dr. Brett Brewin biography

Dr. Brett Brewin is a subject matter expert in the field of microbiology. His initial interest in the molecular biology of nitrogen fixation switched to waterborne disease following the completion of his doctorate.

Brett has over 20 years of practical experience in methods and the analysis of water for the presence of faecal indicator organisms and waterborne pathogens.

He has worked closely with laboratories, experts and regulatory bodies around the world developing new technologies, training analysts and establishing best practice to optimise often complex technical procedures and generate robust methodologies.

Brett received his doctorate in 1998 from the John Innes Centre and University of East Anglia before joining IDEXX as a research scientist.
