We would like to introduce our new Specialist Veterinary Pathologist Dr Jeff Curtis.
Jeff began his interest in pathology at a young age while working as a summer volunteer at the Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory with the FFWCC in St. Petersburg, Florida. From there he pursued a bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology and conservation and then a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 2015 both at the University of Florida. He began his professional career as a wildlife veterinarian at the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge and Zoo. In treating various free-ranging and zoo-owned animals as a veterinarian, his continued investigation of diseases further solidified his interest in pathology. In 2016, he started an anatomic pathology residency at the Zoological Pathology Program at the University of Illinois in Urbana and Chicago, seeing various cases from institutions such as the Brookfield Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, and Forest Preserve District of Cook County, as well as routine domestic animal material. During the residency, he studied Brucella ceti in cetaceans while pursuing his masters degree in veterinary clinical medicine. Jeff looks forward to improving diagnostics and characterisation of important diseases affecting all animals and when he’s not behind the microscope, he enjoys running with his dogs, rock climbing, and heading down to the Gold Coast for some surf.
