For our spring edition of "Down the microscope," we look at a lung aspirate from a 7-week old kitten with Dr. Elise Russell BVSc (Hons), MVS, MANCVS (Feline). She is a Veterinary Clinical Pathologist based in Melbourne.
Case: Lung aspirate from a 7-week old kitten
Diagnosis: Eosinophilic pneumonia due to lungworm infection
Pathologists comments: There is a mixed population of inflammatory cells with a predominance of eosinophils. In this image, there is a single L1 larva morphologically consistent with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus. Cats may become infected by ingesting intermediate hosts (snails, slugs) or paratenic hosts (rodents, birds).
