About Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)/
Bovine Herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1)
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is a highly contagious, infectious disease that is caused by bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1). In addition to causing respiratory disease, this virus can cause conjunctivitis, abortions, encephalitis and generalised systemic infections. Although clinical findings may be highly suggestive of IBR, no real pathognomonic signs provide a clinical diagnosis for IBR. Therefore, laboratory confirmation is necessary to identify BHV-1 infection. Confirmation of exposure to BHV-1 is facilitated by measurement of antibody in serum, plasma or milk. Countries that have IBR control programs require IBR-free certification prior to shipping cattle to their regions. ELISA is the test procedure of choice in many European IBR programs.
